Avignon, the island and the Provence

The unspoilt Barthelasse Island offers a wide range of outdoors ativities. You’ll enjoy its tennis courts, riding stable, rowing center, peaceful freshwater angling, and its restaurants
The Island is an ideal place for walking, cycling (cycles are available for free at La Bastide des Anges), and also for buying fruit and vegetables at its attractive, neat farms, or for visiting a distillery.

The Island is at the crossroads of Provence and Languedoc, two areas with impressive Mediterannean landscapes as well as magnificent historical buildings and cultural places.
On the left side of the Rhône valley, you’ll find Avignon, with its famous La cite des papes, the most important gothic palace in Europe, and its Benezet Bridge, the bridge of legendary fame.
On the right side of the Rhône valley, Villeneuve-lez-Avignon is a charming medieval village, city of cardinals in the XIVth century. With its Chartreuse and its collegiale church, it represents a true heritage site.

Within twenty to thirty kilometres of the Barthelasse Island, you will discover the Pont du Gard, built 2000 years ago, a world heritage monument, the Alpilles with its renowned and peaceful villages such as Saint-Remy-de-Provence and Les Beaux-de-Provence, and Arles , the gateway to the Camargue. There also are second hand shops in l’isle sur la Sorgue, and provençal markets all around. You can take the wine trail to explore the famous vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape, Côtes du Rhône, Tavel, Beaumes de Venise.
Within fifty kilometres of the Barthelasse Island, you will enjoy Nîmes and its Roman Arena, the best preserved amphitheatre in the Roman world, the duché d’Uzès, Camargue. And why not try and canoe down the river Ardèche.
